Higher Education Commission, Pakistan

Established in 1974 initially as the University Grants Commission (UGC), the Higher Education Commission (also known as HEC) ‎is Pakistan’s statutory regulator for higher education in Pakistan. The main functions are funding, overseeing, regulating and accrediting the higher education institutions in the country.

The HEC is also responsible for formulating higher education policy and quality assurance to meet the international standards as well as providing accrediting academic degrees, uplift of existing institutions in Pakistan and development of new institutions. 

HEC has main head-office in Islamabad and four regional centres located around Pakistan (Karachi, Quetta, Lahore, Peshawar). The core function of these centres is to facilitate Institutions of Higher Learning in the region and provide a wide range of HEC services to different universities, faculty members, students as well as general public, as a key geographical site and acts as a hub for the people of this region.
