Oshikhandas is a small town in the outskirts of Gilgit city. Situated about 16 km to the north of Gilgit, it is a... relatively new settlement, established when people migrated from Hunza and Bagrote to the area in the 1930s.What is now Diamond Jubilee Model High School, Oshikandas, providing education from pre-primary all the way to grade 12, was informally started in 1946 as a primary school for boys. Initially the school functioned in the open air due to the unavailability of a proper building. Khalifa Niaz Ali was appointed as the first teacher. The first female teacher was Ms. Yunnan, and she joined in the early 1970s to teach girls. In 1971, the community shifted the school to the Jamat Khana and built a room to serve as a classroom. Later, 2 more rooms were added. In 1982, the Oshikandas school was upgraded to middle school. In 1984, the community started work on a proper school campus with the help of the Aga Khan Education Service, Pakistan, and a year later the school was upgraded to high school. In 2010, Diamond Jubilee High School, Oshikandas was upgraded to a Model School. The school infrastructure was also expanded and another building was constructed to accommodate the increasing number of students and to provide all the facilities of a well-equipped high school. Today, the campus consists of 13 classrooms, a multi-purpose hall, 2 science laboratories, a library, a computer lab, 2 staffrooms, and a principal’s office. In view of the community’s needs and the school’s performance, it was further upgraded to a local higher secondary in 2018. In addition, there is a satellite campus of the school where pre-primary classes are run.DJ Model High School, Oshikhandas has an enrollment of more than 700 students who are taught by 35 teachers. Due to the growing strength, the school has been divided into two shifts. Pre-primary and primary classes run in the morning shift, and middle to higher secondary in the evening shift.Source: Spotlight AKESPread more
